Congress Adapts Strategy: Fields Fewer Candidates in Lok Sabha Elections 2024

top-news

In a strategic move reflecting alliance commitments, the Congress party has announced that it will field the fewest candidates since independence for the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2024. This decision comes amidst a significant decline in Lok Sabha numbers for the grand old party over the past two general elections.

As of now, the Congress has declared 278 candidates from 27 states and eight Union territories, with expectations of naming around 20 more candidates in the coming days. This reduced number marks a departure from previous elections where the party contested significantly more seats. For instance, in 2019, the Congress contested 421 seats, 464 in 2014, and 440 in 2009.

The decrease in the number of seats is attributed to the Congress party’s commitments within the Opposition’s INDIA bloc. This alliance strategy aims to optimize resources and strengthen collaborative efforts to counter the ruling party.

The party has strategically conceded seats to its allies in key states like Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Delhi, Haryana, and Gujarat. This cooperative approach underscores the importance of unity and coalition-building in the current political landscape.

For example, in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress is contesting 17 seats, including strongholds like Amethi and Rae Bareli, while also allocating significant shares to its allies. A similar pattern is observed in other states like Maharashtra, where the party is fielding candidates in 17 seats out of 48, in conjunction with its coalition partners Shiv Sena and National Congress Party.

Moreover, the Congress has conceded six seats to its alliance partner, the Aam Aadmi Party, in Delhi, Haryana, and Gujarat, further illustrating its commitment to collaborative politics.

This strategic maneuvering by the Congress reflects a pragmatic approach focused on maximizing electoral gains through cohesive alliances and targeted seat allocations, signaling a shift towards coalition-based politics in the Lok Sabha Elections 2024.
